[Virtual servers]
Date of publication: 09.10.2025

Your own workstation on Windows VDS opens up a wide range of possibilities and conveniences in everyday use.

You can install the applications you need, browse the internet privately without the risk of someone seeing your browsing history, and use your necessary folders as network drives. In this article, we will describe how to configure and connect a network drive on the Windows operating system.

1. Connect via RDP to the virtual machine

Use the login, password, and IP address of your VDS workstation.

2. Select the folder you want to make available over the network

2.1 Right-click on the selected folder and open its properties

2.2 On the Sharing tab, click the Share button

2.3 Selecting and assigning a user

2.4 Applying settings and copying the folder path

2.5 Connecting to a network drive over the internet

These actions should be performed on another PC where you want to use the network drive.

Replace the computer name with the VDS server's IP address and connect the network drive on your computer.

Use the IP address and path as shown in the screenshot

2.6 Drive authorization

Use the username and password of the assigned user for the folder you are connecting to.

2.7 Upon successful authorization, the drive will appear, which you can access and use for exchange.

All data placed on it will be stored on the VDS workstation. In our example, we are connecting the drive over the internet as if it were on our local network, even though it's not. Unlike the FTP protocol, where you first need to download a file to open it, in our case, the file launches directly from the VDS workstation over the internet.

Launching files from a network drive allows you to open applications, watch movies, listen to music, and work with documents directly from the VDS server.
