Which Linux to choose for your project?

We will list Linux distributions in order, from the most reliable, and describe the pros and cons for each of them.

  1. First place we gave to the recently released Linux distribution Debian 12 (bookworm). This distribution is created and developed by an open community of developers from all over the world, has high popularity and excellent compatibility. A large knowledge base on the settings of a large number of applications. Of the minuses, we note, since it was released recently and is not yet supported by many popular applications, which, of course, have already included it in their plans and it will take some time, i.e. in about six months, this minus will be exhausted.

  2. Second place we will give to the Linux distribution Debian 11 (bullseye). Here are all the pluses from the first, as well as full compatibility of all applications. Of the minuses, respectively, you can mark (EOL) the so-called lifetime, including updates, it will end on 07.2024. If your software is not yet compatible with Linux Debian 12, then Linux Debian 11 will help.

  3. Third place goes to Linux Ubuntu. As we know Linux Ubuntu is based on Debian but has a commercial structure as it is owned by a British company (canonical). This OS is very popular, but because of the structure described above, it can be subject to sanctions, blocking updates for a certain pool of ip belonging to different unfriendly (sanctioned) countries.

  4. Rocky and Alma Linux. We decided to combine these two distributions since both are based on CentOS and are essentially the same. The only difference is that:

    • Rocky Linux - Created by the community, also based on Centos due to its deprecation. This distribution promises long-term support until May 31, 2032.
    • Alma Linux - created by Cloud Linux, which has a Linux of the same name, which is a paid product.

If we compare these two distributions, we would prefer the community, and the honorable fourth place is Rocky Linux. This distribution is well suited for those who are used to managing OS based on Centos and are required for applications developed with support for this OS.
