Workstation on IPv6

A workstation on Ubuntu or Windows on a VDS server can operate using two protocols simultaneously, allowing connection to a remote desktop, for example, via IPv4, while using the internet and other services on the workstation via IPv6.

In most operating systems, such as Windows 10, IPv6 is used by default first, followed by IPv4 if necessary, when both protocols are enabled and configured.

This VDS server configuration allows you to test your website or service using the workstation as the primary client computer, especially if your provider does not offer IPv6 internet or it is needed only temporarily—for testing purposes.

Server services are best checked and tested after configuration, and it is convenient to do so using a VDS server as a workstation, as you immediately get two external static IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6.

On June 8, 2011, major internet providers enabled IPv6 support for testing—this date is considered the day of the IPv6 protocol.

As of June 2024, the global adoption of IPv6 is approximately 40–45% (according to data from Google and other major monitoring platforms).

Country IPv6 Adoption (%)
1 India ~70–75%
2 Malaysia ~65–70%
3 Germany ~60–65%
4 USA ~55–60%
5 France ~50–55%
6 Belgium ~50–55%
7 Greece ~45–50%
8 Brazil ~45–50%
9 United Kingdom ~40–45%
10 Japan ~35–40%

Russia, meanwhile, has an IPv6 adoption rate of 25–30%, due to the still significant number of available IPv4 addresses, and ranks approximately 20–25 in the global ranking.
